Explore how UK organisations have used Guarantee funding to deliver research and innovation with real-world impact. These case studies range from cancer robotics and support for people with Parkinson’s disease to deepfake evidence and 5G health research, demonstrating wider benefits for knowledge, skills, growth and international collaboration.
Featured case studies
EndoTheranostics: Cancer robotics project points UK’s path from lab to market
Developing technology to support people with Parkinson’s disease
Stroll Limited’s NavigAIt project is developing an application that combines artificial intelligence and augmented reality to support people living with Parkinson’s disease.
Understanding deepfakes and legal evidence
Swansea University’s TRUE project examines the reliability of user-generated evidence in legal proceedings, including how deepfakes could affect human rights accountability.
Investigating the potential health effects of 5G
The GOLIAT project investigates the possible health effects of exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, including those used by 5G.
Delivering Impact
Research funded through the Guarantee addresses key priorities for research and innovation in the UK.
Advancing knowledge
ERC Advanced, Consolidator and Starting Grants account for around £730 million of Guarantee funding. These grants back ambitious, researcher-led projects at every career stage, selected on scientific excellence alone.
Improving lives
More than £500 million supported collaborative research on health, climate, energy, transport, food and the environment. The largest share, around £220 million, went to projects tackling climate, energy and mobility challenges.
“…That’s one of the advantages of being involved in these EU-funded projects: you get to interact on a continental scale with lots of different partners, to tackle problems that face us all. The Horizon Europe guarantee enables the UK partners still to have that opportunity.”
Professor Tim George, James Hutton Institute
Driving growth
More than 500 private organisations received funding. The European Innovation Council (EIC) supported breakthrough technologies and fast-growing companies, while industry-led European partnerships connected UK firms with partners across Europe. Through the EIC, the Guarantee kept UK innovators, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and spinouts connected to Europe’s innovation networks during the years of non-association.
Developing talent
The Guarantee gave talented UK-based researchers and innovators continued access to Horizon Europe training and development, in the UK and internationally.
“International collaboration and structured training are key to scientific progress. The [UKRI] Guarantee makes this possible through participation in Horizon Europe.”
Professor Carsten Welsch, University of Liverpool
Strengthening international collaboration
Research partnerships take years to build. The Guarantee meant UK teams could maintain these partnerships across Europe and beyond to work on challenges we all share.
“…. There is a European family of marine prediction and biochemistry scientists….being able to stay connected in our work and continue those relationships, thanks to the Horizon Europe guarantee, is really important.”
Dr Andrew Saulter, Met Office
